How to Choose a Domain Name that perfectly represents your brand and helps you achieve your online goals?
Choosing a domain name is very similar to choosing a brand name.
In fact to have a unique brand name you need to check if the domain name is available before settling for it.
Here are some factors I consider while helping a client choose a domain name.
1. Brand Identity.
It’s always going to be a different process if the brand name hasn’t been chosen yet.
The brand name is key!
It can be coined by defining your brand’s core values, mission, and target audience.
2. Choose a Domain Name Extension.
Domain name extensions are the letters that follow the dot in your domain name (e.g., .com, .net, .io). Popular options include:
– .com (commercial)
– .org (organization)
– .net (network)
– .io (international organization)
– Industry-specific extensions (e.g., .shop, .blog)
This shouldn’t be chosen blindly, make sure your extension aligns with the industry.
You don’t want to use an extension like .tech while you’re running a grocery store, doesn’t make sense right?
3. Consider Length, Memorability, and Pronounceability
Aim for a domain name that is:
– Short and memorable
– Easy to spell and pronounce
– Avoids numbers and hyphens
If you have these in check you can easily tell someone “go to mybrandname:com” and the person will because it’s easy to remember.
This way it’s even easy to get referrals.
4. Check Availability and Trademarks
Use online tools to check if your desired domain name is available and doesn’t infringe on existing trademarks. You can use:
– Domain name registrars like GoDaddy or Namecheap
– Trademark databases like USPTO or WIPO
5: Verify Social Media Handle Availability
I also do this when choosing a brand name, I just like the uniqueness.
So I ensure the desired domain name is not currently being used as a social media handle on platforms like Facebook, 𝕏, and Instagram.
6: Register Your Domain Name
Once you’ve found the perfect domain name, register it through a reputable domain name registrar.
Bonus tip:
Your domain name doesn’t necessarily have to include your brand, you can choose some keywords that emphasize on one of your strengths or uniqueness (UPS).
For example (fastestcarwash:com)
You get it, right?
These steps help you choose a domain name that effectively represents your brand, resonates with your audience, and sets you up for online success.
Remember to act fast, as domain name availability can change quickly!
I once chose a domain name for a business but they weren’t ready, they came back two weeks later and it was no longer available.
We had to start over again 😂
To avoid that don’t waste so much time once you have made a decision, go for it!
PS: I used column (:) instead of dot(.) to avoid making it a link.
